English Gothic

No not the literature genre but the architecture. It's another thing I feel drawn to photograph with its soaring vaults and ethereal lights.

In a few places you still find some last vestiges of the pre-reformation colour or maybe restorations thereof if you like such things.

My own preference is to find light and colour in the stained glass windows ancient and modern.

Sometimes, if you are really lucky, there are reflections to be found in still waters within buildings themselves, in this case in an oversize font.

Everywhere you walk you feel the architects' intent to draw your eyes up to the heavens, to the glorious light of the firmament and it is really spectacular.

As you can see from the photos above, the defining features of English Gothic are pointed arches, rib vaults and the extensive use of stained glass windows allowing the construction of buildings of unprecedented height and magnificence, flooded with light. An architectural photographer's dream.
